Welcome to my garden!
... This past spring I started germinating seeds in the kitchen and attic so I could start a garden in the backyard. Because this is my first year gardening (and I'm unsure how I want to design my backyard garden), I choose to start a "container garden" for this year's season. I thought this blog would be a fun way to visually document the growth of each plant... and eventually the transformation of my whole back yard! Thanks for stopping by and happy gardening! :)

Garden Update...

On July 5th, I germinated broccoli, cauliflower, new onion, and more Tricolor Mix morning glory. I transplanted the hydrangea, the large garden bean, the tomato plant I got from my neighbor, and more Tricolor Mix morning glory was put under the trellis.

On July 6th, I rotated the garden (with the exception of the peas - they cannot be moved), so I don't kill all the grass in the backyard this year... that's next year's job. I also put in poles for the lima beans.

On July 8th, I hung a Japanese beetle trap from a low branch - somewhat hidden - on the other side of the yard and it seems to be doing the trick. After 24 hours, there were 8 to 10 in there and none on any of the plants. I fed all the tomato plants 18-18-21 fertilizer and fed all the other vegetables 9-12-12 fertilizer; flowers and herbs were not fertilized. I also bought a Husky Cherry Red Tomato plant with one flower on it.

On July 9th, I germinated sweet pea, lavender, coleus, more Heavenly Blue morning glory, and Scarlet O'hara morning glory; they are in the kitchen on the windowsill. I added new soil to the window box (in this photo) and put in some Coleus seeds.
